Terran, Protoss, Zerg!

Blizzard has finally released the long awaited game Starcraft 2. I’ve been playing Starcraft 1 for many years – not professionally – but still it’s like a game of chess. The good thing about most real-time strategy games is, that it never seem to get boring. Starcraft 2 is just excellent. Pakistan’s worst floods in recorded history

More than 2 weeks already passed since the floods, triggered by Monsoon rains, destroyed almost about one fifth of the country. Roughly 20 million people and about 160,000 square kilometers of land have been affected by the enormous amounts of water. People there are suffering badly because of the lack of fresh water supplies and a worrying food shortage.

Humanitarian catastrophe

According to the U.N. 3.5 million children are in severe risk of getting ill which is caused by dirty water. The W.H.O. has estimated that about 36.000 people are already affected by the breakout of fatal cholera and the situation is getting worse with each passing day. Relief workers have a hard time to reach the homeless and very desperate people. The communities urgently need fresh water supplies, latrines and hygiene products.

Donations needed

Due to the picture our western media has drawn of Pakistan which has been often portrayed as a “terror-state”, people are hesitating to donate money. When compared to the earthquake which happened earlier this year in Haiti, the amount of total money donated until now is incredibly small. Western nation’s people often think that the money won’t make it to the humans affected. But not donating money at all is the worst option and aid organizations are doing a great job at using the money effectively and making sure that it arrives where it should.

Where are the billionaires?

Shortly before the floods, various media was reporting about the initiative started by Bill Gates and Warren Buffet to convince billionaires all over the world to donate a part of their vast income for good deeds. I’m wondering why they are so silent about that now. If they aren’t just pulling a PR-gag out of that, they should start already to give money or resources to the aid organizations!

Screenshots or captures are a great way to show people how something looks like on your screen. Windows already provides a build-in way to capture your screen(s).

If you press the “Print Scrn” button on your keyboard (it’s usually right above the “Insert” key) Windows will capture your current screen and store it in the clipboard. Usually you paste it into MsPaint or directly into your favorite office application.

To capture the current active window of e.g. your webbrowser you just have to press ALT+Print Scrn and Windows will copy the image of the active window into the clipboard. So far so good.

If you have to work with screenshots on a daily basis you won’t be very happy with the Windows solution. For example I need to make screenshots of applications to prove to the developers that there’s a certain bug in their fancy new program. I started to look around for a tool which is easy and fast to handle, preferably free, lets me draw some circles or rectangles on the captured image and allows me to save the captures directly into files without the need to start mspaint.exe.

So I stumbled upon the free, open source tool called “Greenshot”. It features an own image editor which lets you to instantly edit the screenshot you’ve just made.

If you start up Greenshot and hit the “Print Scrn” button on your keyboard your cursor will turn into a crosshair which lets you to specify the region on your monitor to be captured.

After you have done that your screen will flash and the build-in image editor opens up where you can make further changes to your capture like crop it, write text, draw rectangles, circles or arrows and even obfuscate the parts you don’t want the recipients of your screenshot to be able to read.

And still, you’re able to capture single windows, or your complete screen(s). BTW, you can even capture the output of your video player which displays the picture in overlay mode!

Jailbreaking made easy

The latest and probably best tool to jailbreak your iPod, iPhone or iPad is the website www.jailbreakme.com. To jailbreak your device, just point the Safari browser on your “iDevice” to this address and “Slide to jailbreak”. After a few moments the Cydia app will magically appear and you’re ready to explore a huge amount of useful apps and other tools.

You should consider backing up your device so you can go back to the official “jailed” iOS by using the Restore option in iTunes.

How to get access to the shell?

By default you can find the app “MobileTerminal” on Cydia. This enables you to get command line access directly on the device. The problem is that if you already upgraded your device to iOS4 the MobileTerminal app won’t work. You tap it but then it will close immediately after. The solution for that is to add the source cydia.xsellize.com to Cydia and search for “MobileTerminal iOS4″ and install it. this will install the beta version which is running perfectly on my iPod touch.

The other option is to connect remotely to your device via WiFi. To be able to do so, you’ll need to know the IP address your device got and just connect to it using your favorite ssh client (like PuTTY on Windows).
